Entertaining the Latest Baby! (Not Mine) from Gefilte Quilt

Welcome to the world, Declan! (FYI, your name is pronounced DECK-lan, which I didn't know until your grandma, my friend Lynn, told me about you!)

I made you one of my "Everything in the World" quilts, though sadly some of this stuff is no longer in this world (like Freddy Mercury, RBG and dinosaurs), and some stuff  has never been in the world, depending how you define reality (Mighty Mouse, unicorns, the Golden Snitch.)

In case you take an interest in quilting some day, here's how I made this.
First, I spent 30 years collecting random novelty fabrics ...

Hark! I Hear a Baby Boom! Be Prepared! from Gefilte Quilt

(Below, a brand-new human on a recently finished quilt. Eyes are covered to protect anonymity.)

Is romance in the air? For whatever reason, in my world, babies are a-poppin! Fortunately, I am prepared! Here's my neonatal kit: An oversized shoebox full of maybe 200 4" squares, some of them sewn into 9-patch blocks.

Unpacked, below, you'll find stacks of squares, many tourniqueted with torn white fabric strips, and the category name scribbled in pencil on torn-paper labels, in handwriting so terrible (mine) that I can barely read them.

In the photo above, the categories, starting on the top ...

Thready Scrap Basket, or Scrappy Thread Basket, or Baskety Thread Scraps (A Tutorial) from Gefilte Quilt

Let's give scrap baskets a double meaning! Made from scraps, especially thread scraps, this basket is also a good place to throw them! It's about 4.5" high and 3.5" across. I used silk, so it's extra fancy, but you can use any fabric and threads you like.

One end overlaps the other. Three metallic buttons seal the flap, and I put more buttons below the top edge. The view shifts as you turn it...

Contents include:

-- An old freemotion quilting practice sandwich,

--  Long scrap fabric strips, as background,

-- Ravelled threads on top. Most are threads ...

Confetti Cat Portrait from Gefilte Quilt

BEFORE: In my last blog post, I showed this potential valentine, which my friend Jane pointed out, looks more like the Valentine's Day Massacre.

I certainly couldn't give this to anyone I don't wish to maim. But then it occurred to me that my daughter's cat, Cleocatra, routinely combines love with blood. She doesn't allow claw-clipping, so when she plays with us, scratches can ensue. She's also an unrepentant lizard-tormentor and sewing-machine occupier.

AFTER: So I turned my violent background into this! The perfect Valentine for my daughter!

This technique has been around a ...

Stress Relief with Confetti Valentines and Non-Valentines from Gefilte Quilt

I was minding my own business, making a whole lot of improv triangle kaleidoscopes, like this.

I'm only using solids for this quilt. The smallest scraps were filling my "toss" bin.

But then the Create Whimsy newsletter arrived in my email. Lynn Woll, its curator extraordinare, had an article titled "Scrap Happy Confetti Quilts," with  Valentine's Day projects. Oooooo! It looked like so much fun...and I knew I had loads of fresh scraps.

I plucked the solids from my "discard" bin and sent them into plastic bags, organized by color.

Then I cut out a 4" square ...

Never Too Young to Learn About Black Holes. Or to Make Them. from Gefilte Quilt

I've been playing with wrapping quilt fabric around batting scraps, and weaving them into baskets. Just in time for the holidays, I made a couple of black holes this way, including one for this guy:

I was inspired by a talk at Cal Tech last month by Kip Thorne, who won a Nobel Prize in 2017 for creating LIGO, the project that detected gravitational waves emanating from colliding black holes. (My DH works on this project.)

Instead of resting on his laurels, Kip has been having a blast producing black hole art, including movies (Interstellar, and soon, a sequel ...

The tale of my Scrappy Jacob’s Ladder quilt – WIP from Zarkadia Quilts

Last year on May, I organised a month-long workshop on scrap management and scrappy quilt projects. The workshop included two different scrap patterns to make:

  1. Scrappy Jacob’s Ladder quilt
  2. Harvest Moon (a tutorial by Megan Collins)

I chose to make the scrappy Jacob’s Ladder quilt, as it was on my bucket list for millions of years. I really love the work Blue Elephant Stitches is doing, and back in the day of the blogging season a Value Quiltalong was organised and this quilt was her project. I will write more details on that part later on when the ...

My Newest City Quilt, a Triumph (for the Cat) from Gefilte Quilt

Fresh from the photographer! My newest quilt - it's about 70" high. I should have blocked it, look at that top edge, curved like an archery bow, oy!

This quilt started out with a pile of buildings from my earlier city quilts. Playing with leftovers is SO much more fun than starting from scratch. Along with not having to face a blank design wall, trying to redeem flawed fragments makes me feel environmentally noble - like I'm keeping them out of landfill and thereby saving the world!

The biggest decision I had to make was whether to turn my leftovers ...

sew a scented sachet from Charm About You

These cute scented sachets are quick and easy to sew, perfect to scatter around your house for an uplifting or comforting burst of fragrance! They are a great way to use up scraps of fabric and make nice gifts. Throw them in drawers or shoes, add a loop to hang one in your wardrobe or anywhere that you want a little scented goodness.

The theme for the Aurifil Artisan challenge this month is Holiday Project and having designed these little sachets, I thought it would be fun to sew some winter themed ones and share a tutorial so you can ...

Pandemic Porch Quilt Show Day 34 - 35: My Two Weirdest Quilts in Two Days from Gefilte Quilt

Day #34: Blooming Cactus
Choosing an eye-pleasing color palette did not come naturally to me, and here's the evidence. Let's breathe slowly as we approach this bed-size quilt, so as not to trigger sea-sickness.
It's slightly less terrible when you get very close,  thanks to the blue oasis.
Longtime quilters will recognize this pattern immediately, as a Blooming Nine Patch, from the bestselling 1996 quilt book 'Traditions with a Twist' by Blanche Young and Dalene Young Stone, still widely available (used) online - and sooooo worth it, just for this one pattern.

Sure, I knew that the orange ...

Pandemic Porch Quilt Show, Days 29 - 33: Flamingos and Hashtags and Adverbs, Oh My! from Gefilte Quilt

Day 29: Flamingo Carrom

This was made in the early 2000's, when my kids, my fabric stash, and I were so young! Also, I was obsessed with Marilyn Doheney's wedge rulers. Despite the frenetic color, and, lordy, the gold lame in the center (what was I thinking?)....

...I still sort of love it. Flamingos and zebras and tigers, oh my!

Day 30: Frankenquilt!
The previous project left me a bunch of extra wedges, which I stuffed into my UFO cabinet. About 15 years later, I pulled them out and made the central circle and inner border of this ...

Porch Quilt Show, Day 21: Magic Door from Gefilte Quilt

 Day 21: Magic Door

This may be my first scrap quilt, started in the mid 90s.  I owned very few prints at this point, so it's mostly solids.
For years, it remained a top, and because of the lack of prints, I considered it very old-fashioned. Then, along came the Modern quilt movement. I realized - as did so many other quilters - that I was ahead of my time! So I decided to finish it, adding the log cabin borders (their edges are inexpertly satin stitched). I quilted it, with walking foot quilting. I liked the results enough to promote ...

Turning Lines Into Circles for Curved English Paper Piecing from Gefilte Quilt

What do these English Paper Pieced blocks from my new book, "Hexagon Star Quilts," have in common?
Answer: They're all straight lines. I've always been curve-averse, and although I've done plenty of English Paper Piecing in recent years, almost everything I've made with the technique has had straight lines only.

But quarantine is an opportunity to try new things (assuming you don't have an essential job, young children, and/or a sourdough fixation). So a couple of weeks ago, I plunged into curved EPP in a big way. It turned out to be mostly easier ...

Scary Unfinished Quilt, Happy Ending, Don't Look Too Close from Gefilte Quilt

This is a mystery quilt adventure. If you hate suspense, scroll to the very bottom of the post to see the finished quilt. If you enjoy mysteries, read from the top.

I'll begin this story in front of my UFO (unfinished object) cabinet, a terrifying place, in a far corner of my sewing room, under the ironing board, behind/beneath my Featherweight table.
To open the cabinet's doors, I have to curl myself into in a fetal position - then, the doors open only halfway, before smashing into my knees. Fetal position also describes my emotions, when I look ...

Masked Hexagons, Part II: A English Paper Piecing Variation from Gefilte Quilt

Help!

I'm going nuts making masks!

These are a few of my new masked hexagons, made from the scraps of face masks I've been sewing since March. In my last installment, here, I described how I made these hexies, using conventional English Paper Piecing techniques. At the time, I had only made about 35 hexagons.

Since then, I've made many more masks to donate - I'm closing in on 1,000 masks - and about 40 more masked hexagons. So here's the finished quilt, with a total of 73 masked hexagons, all socially distanced. My free, revised ...

Masked Hexagons, Socially Distanced: An English Paper Pieced Mystery Scrap Quilt from Gefilte Quilt

If you are one of the thousands of quilters giving time and fabric to make lifesaving masks, thank you. For me, making masks is not only a good deed, but a powerful way to reduce anxiety in a tragic  time.

You may also be putting mask scraps aside, to someday make a  quilt. Here’s one idea that you can work on as you continue to make masks:

And here's what it would have looked like on white:

It's not finished - it's just a top - because as I continue to make masks, I will grow it. The ...
